What is Steampunk?

“Steampunk has one foot in the past and one foot in the future”

John Francis 2022

OK, so what does that mean? Steampunk brings together characteristics of the victorian age and blends them with sci-fi. The general theme is that the world has evolved with the technology from the victorian era – think steam-powered machines, cogs, gears, and mechanical devices. Therefore machines, fashion, and landscape are a mix of factual elements from the victorian era blended with creative ideas of a steam-powered imaginary world.

Steampunk is a type of science fiction that originates with the writing of HG Wells and HP Lovecraft. Steampunk art is a combination of visual elements from the victorian ages with an alternative futuristic stamp! Generally, steampunk art is highly imaginative and complex. Many modern steampunk artists use original victorian pieces as the basis of their art, they customize them and repurpose them as steampunk art, and the results can be breathtaking as old pieces are reinvented with a new steampunk twist.
